The Container Garden - Hanging Baskets, Pots and Planters

hangingbasketvideoicon.jpg Summer containers and hanging baskets can be placed outside, unprotected around the end of May or early June - after the last frosts. You can plant up these containers earlier if you can find a position with good light and protection from frost.  For best results, always use new fresh compost, not existing garden soil.

Before planting, mix watering retaining gel crystals and some controlled release fertiliser through the compost - pack the baskets or containers reasonably full from the outset.

Start with a central plant for height at the back or centre. Next stage is to plant trailing plants around the edge, filling in any gaps with other bedding plants.

After care - regular watering is crucial. Dead-heading (removing) any spent blooms and giving additional liquid feeds every 7 days or so for best results.

What can be grown in containers?

Even if you don't have a vast expanse of garden, you can certainly still make your own perfect space for relaxation and enjoy the fruits of your labours. Fill your patio or deck space with pots, planters, hanging baskets and containers - you'd be surprised at what you can grow - even veggies and fruit bushes!  Try tomatoes and basil, bush beans, carrots, physallis and salad plants like lettuce and rocket for example.

Container Gardening - Tips for Success

  • Allow adequate drainage – ensure there are a sufficient number of drainage holes in the container.  Add a layer of drainage material to the base of the pot, eg. broken crock, gravel or even the broken polystyrene material from bedding packs.
  • Use a good quality compost – obviously this depends of what’s being planted – but we recommend Levington & Miracle Gro ranges for all your container gardening needs.
  • Raise the pot off the ground – this is vital for the winter months.  This ensures the water drains sufficiently and prevents pots freezing to floor surfaces.  Choose from a wide range of feet and plant stands at the Garden Centre.
